Education

Denver Trout Unlimited participates in various educational programs including Trout-in-the-Classroom and Meet-the-River. The South Platte River is used specifically for outdoor education and as a gateway to fishing. We also find it important to educate our fellow Denverites on topics such as New Zealand Mud Snails and the different meanings of Macroinvertebrate found in the DSP.

Trout in the Classroom (TIC) is a conservation-oriented, environmental education program for elementary, middle and high school students. Throughout the school year, students:

  • Raise trout from eggs to fry;

  • Monitor tank water quality;

  • Engage in stream habitat study;

  • Learn to appreciate water resources;

  • Begin to foster a conservation ethic; and

  • Grow to understand ecosystems.

Most programs end the year by releasing their trout in a state-approved stream near the school or within a nearby watershed.

During the year each teacher tailors the program to fit his or her curricular needs. Therefore, each program is unique. TIC has interdisciplinary applications in science, social studies, mathematics, language arts, fine arts and physical education.

Meet-the-River

In this program, we expose local civic leadership and other potential partners to the river and its potential. This includes activities like learning how to fly fish, Macro-invertebrates Sampling, and learning ways to identify the river health. This program helps schools and other organizations get in touch with their local rivers.

Aquatic Environment Education

We believe the Denver South Platte provides a connection point to a healthy recreational fishery for the neighborhood kids. We are working to educate all aged kids, including high school and college students, using qPCR tools, among other programs.
