Trout-in-the-Classroom
Trout-in-the-Classroom (TIC)
A conservation-oriented, environmental education program for elementary, middle and high school students.
This program would not be possible without the work of our partners, including teachers and their educational institutions, Colorado Parks and Wildlife, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and volunteers like yourself.
“It’s very valuable for students to watch trout during the beginning of their life cycle. Seeing the trout hatch and swim for the first time creates a connection with the species. By caring for them and seeing them grow, they learn a lot about trout and how to care for the environment. This fosters a desire to protect trout, which is a very valuable takeaway.”
Objectives
The objectives of the TIC program are to introduce a conservation education program into selected schools based on the life cycle of a member of the trout species and to foster increased student public knowledge of water quality issues and cold water conservation. The TIC program curricula will include aquatic biology and ecology, watershed management and stewardship, disease awareness, aquarium maintenance, water quality, fish growth and behavior, health and regulatory concerns, and other topics relative to the TIC program objectives
Program Model
The program is primarily planned, led and implemented by the teacher/educator and learning institution. Our Chapter and Colorado Trout Unlimited are available for financial and technical support, supplementary lessons, and release field trips

““This was an experience these students will always remember. My students are still talking about the trip, and it is my belief that you kick started some new passions”
— Frank Pomponio, Denver Center of International Studies (DCIS) faculty advisor
